Heaven Hill Distillery chooses Apana’s Water Efficiency as a Service to meet water efficiency goals

Kentucky Bourbon Distillery to Reduce Overall Usage and Lower the Total Cost of Water

Bellingham, WA – Apana, the water monitoring pioneer with installations in over 600 U.S. cities, announced today that Heaven Hill Distillery, a family-owned and operated Kentucky Bourbon distillery, has adopted Apana’s Water Efficiency as a Service™ platform to understand how water is consumed by their operational processes in its Bernheim facility in Louisville, KY.

Located in downtown Louisville, the Bernheim Distillery is the primary distillery for Heaven Hill, producing 1,500 barrels of whiskey. By applying a combination of Apana’s in-line and clamp-on meters and proprietary hardware, Heaven Hill is set to monitor water usage across all its processing equipment and assets.

“Water is an essential ingredient in all whiskey,” said Rachel Nally, Director of Environment & Sustainability at Heaven Hill. “With the help of Apana, we are able to create the best whiskey while limiting the overall gallons of water needed at our Bernheim location.”

The Bernheim distillery has 10 metering points to track water usage throughout the multi-building facility, allowing Heaven Hill to see real-time data and 24/7 analytics. The distillery uses this information to identify and resolve issues while monitoring and measuring water usage.

“The numbers have surprised the team,” said Nally. “From what we have learned so far about our water consumption and savings opportunities in just four months, the Apana solution has already paid for itself.”

With multiple city meters feeding the plant, Apana’s Water Efficiency as a Service also provides Heaven Hill with the opportunity to measure, validate, and confirm that the amount of water the city is charging is accurate. Heaven Hill and Apana are now in talks about other areas for improvement.

“We are thrilled that Heaven Hill chose Apana to help them save water at Bernheim,” said Matt Rose, CEO of Apana. “We are looking forward to working more with Heaven Hill’s other distilleries and bottling plants to capture more savings resulting in better plant efficiency.”
